Are Infinite Explanations Self-Explanatory?

چکیده

Consider an infinite series whose items are each explained by their immediate successor. Does such explanation explain the whole or does it leave something to be explained? Hume arguably claimed that fully series. Leibniz, however, designed a very telling objection against this claim, involving of book copies. In paper, I argue Humean claim can, in certain cases, saved from Leibnizian “infinite copies” objection, and provides interesting way defuse some cosmological arguments for existence God give non-theistic but complete Universe. course my argumentation, also show circular explanations can “self-explanatory” as well: explaining two other couple tout court.

Real-Time Self-Explanatory Simulation

We present Pika, an implemented self-explanatory simulator that is more than 5000 times faster than SimGen Mk2 [ Forbus and Falkenhainer, 1992 ] , the previous state of the art. Like SimGen, Pika automatically prepares and runs a numeric simulation of a physical device speci ed as a particular instantiation of a general domain theory, and it is capable of explaining its reasoning and the simula...

Jitter in Self-Explanatory Simulation

Self-explanatory simulators combine qualitative and quantitative models to produce results that have both numerical behaviors and explicit qualitative causal structure. A problem that can arise in such simulations is jitter, a back and forth changing of a comparison that at first glance appears to be an unnatural artifact of the simulation. Jitter can be a serious problem because it slows simul...

Self-Explanatory Financial Planning Models

A financial model is a representation of the activities of a business in terms of quantitative relationships among variables that can help an analyst understand the financial consequences of past activities or assumed future activities. The equations comprising such models form a kind of knowledge base which can be used to generate explanations. In this paper we give some background on financia...

Constructing Self-Explanations and Scaffolded Explanations in Tutoring

One-on-one tutoring is a form of instruction that requires interaction between a tutor and a tutee. The effectiveness of tutoring is examined from the perspectives of the tutor's actions, the tutee's actions, and successive interactions. A tutor's actions that may not lead to successive interactions consist of asking an initiating question, providing feedback, and asking a comprehension-gauging...

Worked-out examples: instructional explanations support learning by self- explanations

Learning from worked-out examples is very effective for initial skill acquisition, at least when learners actively explain the solution steps in the examples to themselves. However, learning solely on the basis of self-explanations is connected with several restrictions, even when effective self-explaining is trained or elicited. Therefore, a coherent set of principles for integrating instructi...
